Make the grid match your display

Pick the number of rows and columns that fits the windows you actually run.

Surface Resize grid · Settings → Displays
Goal
Each display's grid has the rows and columns that fit your windows — most displays do fine with the 4 × 7 default; an ultrawide, small, or portrait display gets its own.

From the resize grid

The quickest way, because you see the result immediately:

  1. Press ⌃⌥⌘Space to open the resize grid on the display you want to change.
  2. Click the ⋯ button (Grid options) in the card below the grid.
  3. Use the + and − buttons next to Columns and Rows.

The grid redraws as you click. Press Esc or click anywhere else on the grid to close the options.

From Settings

  1. Open Settings → Displays.
  2. Find the section named after the display you want to configure.
  3. Adjust the Columns and Rows steppers.

The change applies the next time you open the resize grid on that display.

Why won’t it go higher?

MaxTo caps the rows and columns based on two things: the display’s aspect ratio and a minimum cell size. A 16:9 display tops out at 16 columns by 9 rows, and smaller screens stop earlier so that every cell stays big enough to hit. When the + button is disabled, you’ve reached the limit.
