Use MaxTo with multiple displays

MaxTo follows the focused window. Each display can have its own grid, or you can share one configuration across all of them.

Goal
Every display carries the grid you want it to — shared across displays, or tuned per display.

How multiple displays work

When you press the resize shortcut, the grid opens on the display that holds most of the focused window. That’s the only window MaxTo touches — your other displays are unaffected.

While the grid is open, move it to another display without closing it:

  • Tab or Page Down — the next display.
  • ⇧Tab or Page Up — the previous display.

Both wrap around. The card below the grid always names the display it’s on.

If you’d rather have the grid open where your pointer is, change Show the resize grid under Settings → General. With Centered on the pointer or Under the pointer, matching its position, the grid opens on the display the pointer is on.

Each display has its own grid and its own saved presets. You can tune every display independently, or share configuration across all of them.

Sharing settings between displays

Open Settings → Displays and look for Share settings between displays. There are three options:

  • All displays share one grid. One configuration applies to every display. Pick this if you want consistent behavior everywhere and don’t care which physical screen you’re on.
  • Displays with the same resolution. Displays with the same width × height share a configuration. Useful if you move between desks with identical external displays — plug in a different but identically-sized display and it picks up the same grid automatically.
  • Each display has its own. Each physical display gets its own configuration. Useful for permanent setups with mixed hardware: a small portrait sidekick gets a tall grid; the main 5K display gets a wider one.

If you’re not sure which to pick, Displays with the same resolution (the default) covers most cases.

Presets that follow you

If you press a preset key on a display that doesn’t have it but another display does, MaxTo moves the grid to that other display and applies the preset there. Use this to make a key that sends a window to another display: save the preset on the target display, with a key the other displays don’t use.

Displays that share settings also share presets, so on them the key always resolves on the current display. With the default Displays with the same resolution, that includes two identical displays. Save a preset for one-press snapping walks through the setup.

The Move To submenu in the menu-bar menu lists every display’s presets, so you can send the focused window to any of them with a click.

Remembered positions and displays

A remembered position also remembers its display. Unplug that display and the app’s windows are placed on whichever display they open on instead; plug it back in and MaxTo recognizes it again.
