Customize your shortcuts

Pick the shortcuts that fit your fingers — for the resize grid, Settings, fit to grid, and remembering and recalling window positions.

Goal
Every MaxTo command sits on a combination your fingers like and macOS doesn't already claim.

The shortcuts

MaxTo has six global keyboard shortcuts, all under Settings → Shortcuts. Every default uses ⌃⌥⌘, a combination neither macOS nor other apps use for these keys:

  • Resize window. Opens the resize grid over the focused window. Default: ⌃⌥⌘Space.
  • Fit window to grid. Snaps the focused window to the closest grid cells. Default: ⌃⌥⌘G.
  • Recall window position. Moves the focused window back to its remembered position. Default: ⌃⌥⌘W.
  • Remember window position. Remembers where the focused window is right now as the position for its app. Default: ⌃⌥⌘S.
  • Recall all windows. Moves every window with a remembered position back into place. Default: ⌃⌥⌘A.
  • Open Settings. Opens the Settings window. No default.

A shortcut you clear stays cleared, even when a later version of MaxTo adds new defaults.

Set a shortcut

  1. Open Settings → Shortcuts.
  2. Click the button next to the command — it reads Record Shortcut, or shows the current shortcut.
  3. When it reads Type shortcut…, press the combination you want.

The shortcut works right away. Press Esc while recording to cancel, and click the × next to a shortcut to clear it.

A shortcut must include ⌘, ⌃ or ⌥, so ordinary typing can never trigger MaxTo. A combination without one of them is refused with a beep.

The MaxTo menu-bar menu shows the shortcuts next to their commands, so you can look them up there too.

Pick a combination macOS isn’t already using

If the combination you choose is already claimed by macOS or another app, pressing it triggers the other app instead of MaxTo, or nothing at all. ⌘Space opens Spotlight, and macOS also claims every two-modifier combination with Space, such as ⌥⌘Space for a Finder search.

MaxTo warns you in Settings → Shortcuts, right under the shortcut:

  • “Another app is already using this shortcut.” Pick a different combination.
  • “macOS also uses this shortcut.” Pick a different combination, or turn the macOS shortcut off in System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts.
Combinations that usually work Three modifiers plus a key, like the defaults' ⌃⌥⌘, are almost always free. ⌘ plus a letter on its own is almost always taken by the app you're in.

Without a keyboard shortcut

Each command is also an action in the Shortcuts app, so you can run it from Spotlight, Raycast, or anything else that runs shortcuts. See Shortcuts app actions.

What happens when the trial expires

If the trial has ended and there’s no license, the MaxTo shortcuts open the License page in Settings instead. Activate a key from there to restore the normal behavior. The Open Settings shortcut keeps working regardless.
