The grid

The grid is the canvas you snap into. Choose a size that matches how you split your screen.

What the grid is

When you open the resize overlay, MaxTo paints a grid of cells across your monitor. Every snap rectangle is some sub-rectangle of that grid: a single cell, or several adjacent cells.

The default is four rows by seven columns — coarse enough to land on halves and quarters cleanly, fine enough that thirds and other useful fractions still align.

The grid is a vocabulary, not a constraint: it gives every useful position a name your fingers can find again.

Per-display configuration

The grid is per display: each monitor gets its own rows × columns and you can tune them independently. Change them under Settings → Displays. See Make the grid match your monitor for the click path.

Selecting more than one cell

Inside the resize overlay, drag from one cell to another and MaxTo selects every cell in between as a rectangle. The window resizes to fit that rectangle as you drag, so you can see exactly where it’ll land before you let go.

Why saved positions survive grid changes

A preset — and a remembered position — is stored as a fraction of the screen, not as cell coordinates. A region that covers the right half at 4 × 7 still covers the right half at 5 × 9 or 3 × 10. The grid is how you draw a region; the fraction is what MaxTo keeps. Change the grid as often as you like — everything you saved follows.

Limits on grid size

The maximum rows and columns are bounded by two things:

  • The display’s aspect ratio. MaxTo won’t let you go finer than the screen’s own proportions can sensibly represent.
  • A minimum cell size. Cells need to be large enough to click on; that imposes a hard cap on each axis.

If a value won’t go any higher, you’ve hit one of those limits.
