- Goal
- New windows from an app land in the position you chose — automatically, or only when you ask.
- Before you start
- You can snap a window with the resize grid.
Remember a position
From the resize grid (⌃⌥⌘Space), any of these remembers the position for the focused window’s app — and moves the window there at the same time:
- ⇧ + drag a region on the grid, keeping ⇧ down as you release.
- ⇧ + click a preset thumbnail.
- ⇧ + press a preset’s key.
While ⇧ is held, the card below the grid reads “This position will be remembered for the app.” in orange. A message near the bottom of the screen confirms it — ”App windows will open here” — with an Undo button that un-remembers it on the spot.
An app has one remembered position. Remembering a new one replaces the old.
The position is remembered on the display the grid is on. To have an app’s windows open on a different display, press Tab (or Page Down) to move the grid there first, then ⇧ + drag.
To remember a position without touching the grid, put one of the app’s windows where you want its windows to go. Then do one of these:
- Press ⌃⌥⌘S, or choose Remember Window Position from the MaxTo menu-bar menu. The same message with Undo confirms it.
- Open Settings → Applications, click Add Application, and choose the app from the list of running apps. MaxTo remembers where its frontmost window is right now.
Recall windows on demand
Recalling moves windows back to their remembered position whenever you ask — useful after a presentation, after plugging in a display, or plain window sprawl.
- Recall Window Position moves the focused window back to its remembered position.
- Recall All Windows moves every window with a remembered position back into place.
Both are in the MaxTo menu-bar menu. Recall Window Position is ⌃⌥⌘W and Recall All Windows is ⌃⌥⌘A by default. Change them under Settings → Shortcuts, or run them from the Shortcuts app.
Recall works even for apps whose Automatic toggle is off. If the focused window’s app has no remembered position, Recall Window Position just beeps.
Stop moving windows automatically
If you want a position kept for on-demand recall but don’t want new windows moved on their own:
- Open Settings → Applications.
- Turn off Automatic for that app.
New windows now appear wherever the app puts them; the remembered position is only used when you recall.
Forget an app
- Open Settings → Applications.
- Click the trash button (Forget this application) on the row you want gone.
MaxTo stops moving that app’s windows and discards the remembered position. (If you just remembered it by accident, the Undo button on the confirmation message does the same thing faster.)
